Arriving first, Medic 655-1 reported heavy smoke and a working rubbish
fire impinging on the 2½ story single-family residence and upgraded
the alarm to a structure fire, therefore bringing an additional two
companies.
Prior to the fire department's arrival, a paramedic from the ambulance
entered the house to evacuate the lone elderly resident.
Several construction workers became trapped on the roof after roofing
materials accidentally made contact with live electrical wires that were
supplying the residence. The contact charged the gutters, downspouts, and
the workers’ ladders. The electrical charge heated materials lying in the
yard causing them to ignite and impinge on the residence. The electrical
charge also heated the roof, starting to melt the soles of the workers'
boots.
Upon arrival, Truck 611 (a 75' quint) positioned on Side A and laddered
the roof with the aerial device. The truck company's inside team entered
the residence while the driver/operator rescued the construction workers
via the aerial device and additional crewmembers laid out an 1-¾”
attack line to darken the fire.
To supply Truck 611, Richland Township's Truck 3-1 (a quint) laid an LDH
supply line from a hydrant at 15th Street and Somerset Avenue.
Engine 616-1 staged on Cambria Avenue and sent its crew to Truck 611. Truck
3-2 (also a quint) approached the residence via an alley on Side D of the
structure and positioned short of it. Following a quick knockdown, crews
overhauled the debris and structure. Damage was limited to construction
equipment and the exterior of the residence. The contractor's ground ladder
(pictured below right) shows what kind of damage an electrical current can
cause.
At the Windber Fire Department's annual Wall of Fame/Inaugural Banquet held
on January 10, 2004, two members of the department, Aaron Cicon and Bill
Stiffler, received Recognitions of Valor
for their actions in rescuing the five workers that were trapped on the burning
roof.
