The Windber Fire Department is always looking for dedicated, aggressive people to become firefighters, rescue technicians, emergency medical technicians, and administrative members.
Becoming a volunteer firefighter is a unique experience that can be quite rewarding. Motivation, dedication, and professionalism are qualities that successful volunteers must possess. Volunteering requires commitment to the long hours, hazardous situations, and dirty work; this is a commitment that not only you but also your family must agree upon.
Being a volunteer firefighter is a lot more than just fighting fires. More time is spent raising funds and performing administrative tasks than are spent responding to calls for help. The Windber Fire Department is also very involved in many aspects of the community, including performing fire safety inspections, teaching fire safety, and assisting with community events.
No experience is necessary to become a member. All training is provided at no cost to members and at various times to accommodate most people's schedules. The level of activity that you will be able to perform at will depend on the amount of training that you have successfully completed. Remember, no matter what amount of training that you have, everyone is needed to help. Some of the duties that one could perform as a volunteer firefighter/EMT, upon completion of specific levels of training, include:
Fighting fires.
Rescue of victims trapped by fire, vehicle accident, or other hazards.
Treatment of medical or trauma patients.
Driving, operating and maintaining emergency vehicles.
Providing various public services.
Teaching fire prevention and safety classes.
Performing fire safety inspections.
So, if you have some spare time and feel you can help serve your community and our department, please feel free to stop by and request an application. Even if you are not interested in fighting fires, there are many other activities that you can participate in. We look forward to hearing from you.
